Pet food packaging carries multiple responsibilities. It must protect product quality, extend shelf life, withstand the rigors of logistics and transportation, and simultaneously capture consumer attention on store shelves. For brand owners, selecting the right packaging often requires answering a series of practical questions: Which bag type suits the physical characteristics of the product? What specific pain points do different packaging formats address? How does one strike a balance between functionality and cost?

MTPak specializes in providing customized packaging solutions for pet food brands. We do not pursue flashy concepts but instead start with the product itself. Based on the actual packaging requirements of different product categories, we help brands find the most suitable bag type. Below, we introduce corresponding packaging options and considerations based on several common pet food categories.

What Kind of Packaging Do Freeze-Dried and Fresh Pet Foods Need?

Freeze-dried and fresh pet foods are categories that have grown rapidly in recent years. Freeze-dried food is produced using a vacuum freeze-drying process, resulting in a porous structure with a large specific surface area. When exposed to air, it readily absorbs ambient moisture, causing the product to soften and its texture to deteriorate. Additionally, freeze-dried products often contain considerable fat content; light and oxygen accelerate fat oxidation, leading to rancidity that affects palatability and quality stability.

Fresh pet food typically requires frozen or refrigerated storage and transport. These products contain high moisture and animal fat levels, demanding packaging with good low-temperature resistance and barrier properties. In freezing environments, standard packaging materials become brittle and are prone to cracking during handling or dropping. Furthermore, thawed fresh products may exude juices, requiring packaging with adequate puncture resistance and seal strength to prevent leakage.

For these product characteristics, the stand-up pouch with a flat bottom is a suitable packaging format. The flat base allows the pouch to stand stably when filled, enabling neat arrangement on freezer shelves and convenient storage in consumers’ home freezers. Regarding materials, a high-barrier structure incorporating an aluminum foil layer is typically used. Aluminum foil effectively blocks oxygen, light, and moisture vapor, slowing fat oxidation and moisture absorption. For products requiring frozen storage, the outer layer should utilize films with good low-temperature resistance, such as polyester or nylon. The inner heat-seal layer needs to maintain strong heat-seal strength at low temperatures to ensure seals do not crack in freezing conditions.

Freeze-dried products are often irregularly shaped with sharp edges, posing a puncture risk to the packaging interior during transport. When laminating materials, increasing the thickness of intermediate layers or using nylon film with better puncture resistance should be considered to reduce transit damage. For larger, family-size freeze-dried products that consumers access multiple times, resealable features such as zippers or sliders can be incorporated. These allow for easy resealing after each use, slowing down moisture absorption.

How Do Wet Foods and Retort Products Withstand High-Temperature Sterilization?

Wet foods, meal pouches, and gravy-based products have high moisture content, making them susceptible to microbial growth at ambient temperatures. They must undergo high-temperature, high-pressure sterilization to achieve commercial sterility and long-term preservation. The common sterilization method is retort processing, with parameters varying according to the product recipe and package specifications. This process imposes stringent requirements on the packaging material’s heat resistance and interlayer bond strength.

Under high temperatures, different materials have varying coefficients of thermal expansion. If the laminate structure is poorly designed or the adhesive is unsuitable, the packaging layers can separate, leading to blistering or delamination. Inks must also be retort-resistant, maintaining color intensity and not migrating at high temperatures, ensuring printed graphics remain clear and preventing ink components from contaminating the contents.

Retort pouches are packaging formats specifically developed for this application. Compared to traditional metal cans, retort pouches are lighter, have lower transport costs, occupy less warehouse space, and are easy to open without tools. A retort pouch structure typically consists of an outer polyester film, a middle aluminum foil layer for high barrier properties, and an inner retort-grade film that contacts the food directly and must possess excellent hygienic properties and heat-seal strength.

The specifications and thickness of retort pouches need adjustment based on product characteristics. Wet foods containing bones or hard particles require higher puncture resistance from the inner film. Products with high gravy content demand stricter seal integrity. Regarding pouch styles, beyond the common three-side seal pouch, stand-up or flat-bottom versions can be used to facilitate shelf display.

From a user experience perspective, retort pouches can feature tear notches or laser scoring, allowing consumers to open them cleanly without spills. In terms of printing, the smooth surface of retort pouches is well-suited for rotogravure printing, enabling fine detail in graphics and text. This helps brands achieve visual differentiation on shelves compared to traditional metal cans.

How Do Large-Format Kibble Bags Balance Load-Bearing and Convenience?

For households with medium to large breed dogs, single purchase quantities are larger, making bags of 5 kilograms or more the market mainstream. Once filled, these bags have a significant total weight, imposing high demands on load-bearing capacity, drop resistance, and handling convenience. Moreover, dry kibble takes considerable time to consume after opening; the bag’s resealability directly impacts whether the product maintains its crispy texture long-term.

Large-format kibble bags commonly use quad seal bags. This style is sealed on all four sides, resulting in a symmetrical structure with even stress distribution and strong load-bearing capacity. Material selection typically involves an outer layer of polyester or biaxially oriented nylon for strength and stiffness, a middle layer of metallized film or aluminum foil depending on barrier requirements, and an inner layer of polyethylene or polypropylene for heat-sealing properties. After lamination, the multilayer material must possess sufficient tensile strength and seal strength to ensure seals do not burst during stacking and handling.

During warehousing and transport, large-format bags must withstand certain stacking heights and drop impacts. Material lamination requires attention to interlayer peel strength and impact resistance to prevent bag breakage in transit. For exported products or those undergoing long-distance shipping, the bag’s airtightness must also be considered to prevent ballooning or leakage due to pressure changes.

Handling convenience is a crucial factor affecting consumer experience. Large, heavy bags are difficult to maneuver without handles and prone to slipping. Carry handles can be integrated into the packaging, either as die-cut handles formed from the bag material itself or as attached plastic handles. These distribute stress points during lifting, making transport easier and safer. Handles also aid in controlling the pour when dispensing kibble.

Regarding resealability, large kibble bags, once opened, may take a week or two or even longer to be fully used. Equipping the bag with a slider or zipper allows consumers to conveniently reseal it after each use, reducing product exposure to air and delaying staling. The placement and width of the resealable feature must be designed according to the bag style and fill volume to ensure reliable sealing and easy operation.

The large surface area of big bags allows for substantial informational content. Beyond mandatory details like product name, net weight, and ingredient list, they can display feeding guides, brand stories, or production process descriptions. This helps consumers understand the product and builds brand recognition. Print design should ensure logical information layout, with key details placed prominently.

What Should Be Considered for Small Treat and Training Food Packaging?

Pet treats and training foods are typically sold in small-format packaging, with single-serving sizes being small and the package being consumed quickly after opening. The usage scenarios for these products are diverse: some are used as rewards during outdoor walks, others during indoor training sessions, and some as backup food while traveling. The high frequency of use and varied scenarios place significant demands on packaging portability and ease of use.

Stand-up pouches with zippers are a common format for small treats. Their flat-bottom design allows them to sit stably on tables, floors, or picnic mats without tipping over. The pouch body is usually small, easily fitting into backpacks or pockets for convenient carrying. The zipper allows for repeated opening and closing, suitable for packaging intended for multiple uses, such as small treats for training rewards.

Three-sided seal pouches are suitable for single-serving formats, such as trial sizes, giveaways, or individually wrapped meat strips or freeze-dried pieces. This pouch style has a simple structure, uses less material, and has a lower cost. Consumers tear it open and use it in one go, eliminating the need for resealing. For brands, three-sided seal pouches can serve as sampling vehicles for new product introductions, allowing consumers to try the product at low cost.

The limited surface area of small pouches requires clean, straightforward print design. The brand logo, product name, flavor, and other key information must be clearly legible, avoiding excessive decorative elements that might hinder information transmission. For small pouches with clear window designs, the product form can be displayed directly, enhancing consumer visual appeal. However, it’s important to note that the barrier properties of the transparent window area may be reduced, requiring evaluation based on product characteristics.
